It was a poor excuse for a fatwah because it was a poor excuse of a book.
Indeed, Mr Rushdie is, all things considered, a bit of a twat
And it was one of those times when being "on the side of freedom" meant lining up with a bunch of dodgy self-servers and racist west-is-besters that you wouldn't want to share a lift with let alone a political struggle.
I'd suggest Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel Persepolis - because it hides no horror and illustrates the middleclass city vs countryside peasant dilemma that fucked the post-Shah era.
