According to the old joke, the Welsh make great soldiers providing they have white officers.
One of the core elements of the "Truth" movement, in both the US and UK, is their refusal to accept that Al Qaeda could have done what they appear to have done on 9/11 - to attack the greatest military power on earth, on its own soil, using its own planes as weapons. Former American servicemen like Jim Fetzer, who came to fame heading "Scholars For Truth" are agog at the idea that a man "living in a cave" could have humbled America, using men armed only with craft knives and their own fists.
Whilst we should note the implicit racism here (why should Arabs or Asians not be as militarily capable as the west?) there is nothing new in this attitude. During the rebellion against British rule in India 150 years ago, a similar idea took root amongst Britons. The historian Rosie Llewellyn-Jones comments:
"Complacent Britons simply did not believe that the rebel soldiers could have fought so well and so bravely unless they were under the command of Europeans"
