I have just been reading the Pluto Press new books catalogue for January - June 2013, which I picked up last month at the Anarchist Bookfair in London.
Amongst their bestsellers is "Penny Red: Notes From the New Age of Dissent" by Laurie Penny. Counting the hours and minutes until pay day, I raised a wry smile at this line:
"Selected writings from a prominent voice of the new activist left. Reflections on being young, broke and angry in the 21st century".
Laurie Penny went to one of the UK's leading independent schools - Brighton College, and then to Wadham College, Oxford. She now writes opinion pieces for the New Statesman and the Independent. Lots of things could be said about her - that she is or ever has been 'broke' is not one of them. To paraphrase Ivor Bulmer-Thomas' famous quote about Harold Wilson - if Laurie Penny has ever gone without boots, it is because she is too big for them.
Why do Pluto insult potential readers with this rubbish?
