If you ever wanted an example of what is going wrong in a borough that has tens of thousands of homeless people and an unemployment rate nearly twice the national average, consider this:
"Over the past few months, a mid-20th century factory, earmarked for demolition, on Tudor Road, E9 has slowly and painstakingly been transformed into a work of art by Alex Chinneck in association with Sumarria Lunn Gallery. People passing by have been doing a double take, realising that the original broken windows had been replaced with..... broken windows, albeit 312 identically smashed panes."
Spaces, issue 37 Summer 2012 - the newsletter of The Hackney Society.
I would really, really like that to be a spoof, taking the piss out of middle class artists slumming it, with too much time and too much of their parents money on their hands. But, anyone who has lived in Hackney for more than five minutes will know that it is real. At times you realise this borough is more of a playground than a community.
