I carry no brief for President Obama, but this is ludicrous, and not untypical of a strand of Islamist discourse that is very rarely comented upon. And never, in my experience, commented upon by UK academics:

Hia Paul: I think you'll find this sort of self-pitying exageration is part of many political discourses. Odd too that when a tragedy occurs which is not immediately associated with their group, their ideological lens shifts has to interpret it in a way which foregrounds them. But these self-aggrandising features are by no means unique to Islamism, but can be found pretty much across the board of hierarchical movements.
Odd how too how the different religious-ethnic authoritarianisms ape each other in their organisations and modes of address, for instance MPACUK clearly copying AIPAC and BIPAC.
