What is the most popular sport in Senegal?
There may be more African footballers from Senegal playing in European leagues than any other African nation, but Senegal's real sport is wrestling. David Goldblatt's documentary on Radio 4 at 1100 this morning covers the wrestlers, magic charms and crowds, and is repeated on Monday 27 December at 8.30pm.
Well spotted Paul. I knew of course about Senegalese traditional wrestling but had no idea that it had become such a huge professional sport in the country. Is this the last outpost of professional "shoot" wrestling apart from sumo? And how long before ensuring that the promotors get bums on seats leads to "worked" matches. Anyway, Radio 4 at it's best.
