Round about a decade ago, I can remember seeing Audley Harrison in Tottenham.
He is absolutely fucking huge, and I listened to one of his friends holding court to some girls about how he was going to be a World Champion. Well, he has been Olympic champion, but even with the alphabet soup nature of contemporary world boxing bodies, we can be pretty certain that Audley will never be World Heavyweight boxing champion.
Audley is back on our radar as he has signed up for the Prizefigher night at York Hall in October. Eight heavyweights are signed up, with Danny Williams and Michael Sprott from the top draw (if that can ever be said about the current crop of British heavyweights)
Of the other fighters Michael Holden and Scott Gammer are unlikely to trouble an on-form Sprott or Willams, whilst I know little about Danny Hughes or Coleman Barrett. I would like to see Lisburn's Scott Belshaw do well (his family are old friends of my mothers) but you can't look beyond either Williams or the durable Sprott to claim the £32,000 prize.
Last word however should go to Audley Harrison. "I've just been ticking over, waiting for a door to open". Audley - you have been through more doors than a waiter at the Savoy.
