My trivial mind has been chewing over the departure of Brent North MP Barry Gardiner from Gordon Brown's government.
Beardie Barry was sacked yesterday, following a Sunday newspaper article where Gardiner produced the statement of the bleeding obvious of 2008 so far - that Brown is not a popular Prime Minister.
Gardiner always manages to hold my attention for a few minutes (unusual for any new Labour MP) because he looks so much like the former Soviet spy George Blake. I get images in my mind of Gardiner shinning over the wall at Wormwood Scrubs, and Pottle and Randle hiding him in their camper van before driving off to Berlin.
I doubt however that Gardiner used to hold Gordon Brown's attention - he had the utterly pointless position of "Special Envoy on Forestry to the Prime Minister". I have no idea why Gordon Brown needed such a person, and I doubt many people in Brent North follow forestry too closely. Clearly the job did not mean too much to Gardiner, or he would have kept his mouth shut.
Why then do such pointless positions exist?
